Review

This blockbuster thriller set the trend in horror films for years to come. Peck and Remick play the newly appointed American ambassador to England and his wife, who unwittingly become the parents of the Antichrist, Damien. Whitelaw is chilling as the nanny who stops at nothing to protect her charge. Definitely not for the squeamish. (Followed by 2 sequels)

  DIAL 666 FOR ZZZ

NATALIA CARLISLE wrote on 10/20/2001:

"What could be wrong with our child? We're beautiful people, aren't we?" soap opera wife Lee Remick asks Ambassador Gregory Peck RE: their adorable little Damien. Well, Lee, let's see. For starters, his first nanny commits suicide in front of a birthday carnival of frolicking tots; he goes bonkers when his parents try to take him to church (okay, that's normal); and his only friend is a big scary black dog his new, creepy nanny found "in the woods". Meanwhile, every other animal flees Damien in terror, except for the baboons who become so agitated when Lee takes the apple-cheeked moppet to a safari park that they actually attack the family station wagon (the film's unintentional comic high point). This wildly popular, logic-free mega-hit is ludicrous, slick trash built around a can't-miss formula: Take a catalogue of creatively gory death scenes, add a pinch of Biblical mumbo-jumbo and a "respectable" cast, half-bake, and frost with the loudest, most overwrought Jerry Goldsmith score possible. Repeat recipe as often as is profitable-- in this case, three more times. DAMIEN-- OMEN 2 (with that cool evil raven) is actually much more enjoyable than the original, and the third chapter, THE FINAL CONFLICT is best and bloodiest of all, starring Sam Neill as the hunky adult Damien, and thankfully introducing sex to the series, as well as the most dead babies you've seen outside of a junior-high joke book. Now that's entertainment! (The last installment, OMEN 4, went straight to cable, proving that these days a distribution deal is no guarantee for even Satan himself.)
