Review

In movies, at least, good things rarely come in threes. From Godfathers to Matrixes, the final acts of cinematic trilogies are often crushing disappointments. Leave it to the remarkable Lord of the Rings trilogy to create a third installment that not only succeeds, but is indeed the best of the three and one of the best adventure films ever made. Deftly wrapping up ten hours of loose ends while inventing dozens of new creatures and countless stunning special effects, The Return of the King follows Frodo, Sam and Gollum's final steps to Mordor, Aragorn's ascent to the throne, and Gandalf's rousing of an entire Middle-earth army. A gripping seige at the midpoint escalates from sword and arrow play to the felling of ten-story mastodons to the summoning of an undead army. It might all be computer effects, but director Jackson uses technology as a necessary tool to create the seamless, large-scale excitement. The actors, as always, are terrifically engaging, and in an extended epilogue are given a quiet chance to really expand their chops. It's incredibly sad to part with these delightful hobbits, elves, dwarves and men -- a surprisingly resonant emotion coming from the fantasy realm, but one that is earned by the care, enthusiasm and daring that went into the electrifying whole. Winner of 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Director.
