Synopsis

Based on Douglas Adams' cult book/radio show/TV series, this big-screen version follows the intergalactic adventures of the nerdy Arthur Dent (Freeman), who escapes the destruction of Earth with alien friend Ford Prefect (Def) in search of stories for the book "The Hitchhiker's Guide of the Galaxy."

Review

The danger in Jennings’ feature debut, as it’s always been with Adams’ book, is that you may be inclined to take it all too seriously. The story dishes up cosmic adventure, treading a thin line between indulging in and spoofing space opera pretensions. And many a plot twist hinges on the sort of zen jokes philosophical frat brothers might toss at each other over beers at ivy league universities. But at its heart, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is about an average guy that meets an amazing woman, only to lose her – and his home planet - to a flashy rival before he can prove his worth, and he ends up having to move Heaven and Earth (literally in this case) to get her back. This sweet treat is frosted over with a thick coating of smart gags and spectacle, making it worthy of repeat viewing for more than just the corps of Adams fanatics. Some of the casting choices made these fans nervous, but each member of the solid cast fits their appointed role incredibly well. Of course, some of those fans are bound to hate it, as any adaptation will fail to match the one they’ve been carrying in their heads for many years.
