Film school rarely leads its graduates down a career path in the same way that law students or MBAs enjoy. But Spike Lee bucked the odds, scoring acclaim for his NYU thesis film Joe's Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads and securing funding for his first feature, She's Gotta Have It. Those successes led to big studio glory, if not blockbuster box office, with such social dramas as Do the Right Thing and Malcolm X. He has dabbled in TV and documentary, with the concert film The Original Kings of Comedy and the Peabody award-winning When the Levees Broke. Spike Lee finally had his first blockbuster with the Denzel Washington thriller Inside Man.
