Synopsis

Inspired by the Disneyland attraction, this swashbuckling comic adventure casts Depp as a renegade pirate who teams with a lovelorn blacksmith to rescue a damsel in distress -- kidnapped by the notorious captain of the pirate ship Black Pearl.

Review

Throughout his career, producer Jerry Bruckheimer has packaged some processed movie junk that has screamed "concept" -- but making a movie based on a Disneyland attraction? Sheer folly, if not downright the end of civilization as we know it, right? Well, a funny thing happened on the way to the road of ruin: a long-dead film genre is reborn, a Hollywood rebel hits the mainstream big time, and the movie summer of '03 has one of its biggest -- and most deserved -- hits. Not since Errol Flynn and Burt Lancaster buckled their swash has a pirate adventure delivered the goods. Cutthroat who? Ar-r-r-r. In a wonderfully comic performance that combines the attitude of Keith Richards, the timing of Jack Benny and the swagger of Lauren Bacall, Depp shines as the notorious Captain Jack Sparrow, a pirate commander who has lost his ship, the Black Pearl. It's been stolen by the nasty Captain Barbossa (a devilishly sly Rush), whose crew has attacked the Caribbean port town Port Royal and kidnapped the governor's feisty daughter Elizabeth (Knightley). The unlikely tag team of Jack Sparrow and heroic blacksmith Will Turner (Bloom) sail to her rescue, setting in motion high-seas adventure with supernatural spirits, black-hearted pirates and the British navy. Director Verbinski, who brought just the right amount of suspense to The Ring, nicely balances comedy, intrigue, swordplay and special effects (which aren't allowed to overshadow the story), ensuring that while no one will take it too seriously, all will be mightily entertained.

Black Pearl Sparkles

James M. wrote on 06/14/2006:

Who knew an old Disneyland Theme Park ride could turn into so engaging a film? I actually avoided the big-screen version of this Depp outing until a friend irged me to go ahead and give it a go. And boy was I glad I did. Eye Candy like Bloom and sometimes Depp (his role here not always so glamorous -the charm's there tho) make for a good view but its the story and the escapism that make it so much fun. Even on DVD in my Home Theatre it is every bit as much a delight! After the fun here, I can't wait to see these two pull out their rapiers in their next go-round!

Johnny Depp is worth the loop-holed plot

Slick Mick (calendarlcc@yahoo.com) wrote on 10/25/2003:

Yes, I agree that Jerry Bruckheimer's movies are overblown Hollywood-formatted crap that people waste their money on because "the commercial looked good" (ie Pearl Harbor and the 15 min. they gave to actual history). And sometimes Jerry floors you with a tiny piece of gold (tv's "CSI" and "Remember the Titans"). And However, the only gold is the excellent, comedic performance of Johnny Depp, and Geoffry Rush was lots of fun, too. I am so glad to say, both Depp's and Rush's acting brilliance extense to comedy. The plot was silly with loop-holes everywhere and the other actors are so dull and monotone, you'll never hear about them again after this movie. It's rare that an actor can be the lotus flower grown in crap, but this one has two so, Mr. Bruckheimer, you lucked out this time!
