- David Cronenberg
David Cronenberg
This Canadian auteur built his career on icky horror built around body fluids, progressed to cerebral and deep psychological terror, and in the 2000s has explored the roots of violence itself, and its connection to sexual impulse. If that sounds heady, it also shouldn't detract from the thrilling ride that Cronenberg always sends his audiences on. Even more amazing, he usually works with independent studios on relatively tiny budgets, even when adapting a major work like Naked Lunch. Some of his widely acknowledged masterworks are Dead Ringers, The Fly and Spider, and he may be making his best work as he grows older, including A History of Violence.
